Building Safe Communities

Those working with communities in traditional, proactive policing models are seeing a strong trend taking place.  Communities are recognizing that they need to focus on the broader issue of “neighbourhood safety,” rather than only on “crime prevention.”

Neighbourhood safety is one of the most important components of a strong sense of community, and it results from caring adults who participate in the “informal social control” that characterizes their communities. 

We all know areas of the city where we sense safety, and other areas where we do not.  But we have to recognize that community safety is not imposed because a police patrol car drives past your home.  Instead, it begins with the willingness of the average person to get involved in contributing to the public good, whether formally or informally.

Youth Research Review - BC Crime Prevention Association PDF Print E-mail

Over the past year, BCCPA has been working on the completion of a research project that has reviewed over 20 youth programs from across the province of British Columbia.  The “Youth Crime Prevention Projects – What Works?” resource tool is aimed at both funding organizations and programs operating for at-risk youth, providing useful information based on experience.  The programs reviewed in this tool range in their delivery focus to include: Mentoring, Youth Camps, Train the Trainer, Drop-in/After School, Outreach, Workshops and Aboriginal based programs.

International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC) latest reports PDF Print E-mail
Statistics and Research

The International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC) is an international forum for national governments, local authorities, public agencies, specialised institutions, and non-government organisations to exchange experience, consider emerging knowledge, and improve policies and programmes in crime prevention and community safety. The ICPC staff monitor developments, provide direct assistance to members, and contribute to public knowledge and understanding in the field.

There are a number of current reports published by ICPC that will be of interest to Albertans working in crime prevention. The two latest reports are:

  • Communities in Action for Crime Prevention and

  • Community Safety Partnerships by and with Indigenous Peoples
