Reporting Crime

 Contact: http://www.calgarycrimestoppers.org/

Crime Stoppers is a citizen, media and police co-operative program designed to involve the public in the fight against crime. Crime Stoppers provides citizens with a vehicle to anonymously supply the police with information about a crime or potential crime. A reward of up to $2000.00 is offered to anyone providing information, which leads to an arrest, the recovery of stolen property or the seizure of drugs.

The Crime Stoppers tip line is staffed by trained personnel who receive, process and pass on tip information to law enforcement agencies. Callers are given a code number, which is used in all subsequent calls. Crime Stoppers wants the caller's information not their names.

The success of Crime Stoppers is also dependant on the support provided by local media. Unsolved crimes are re-enacted and shown on television, publicized in print or aired on local radio stations. As well as featuring crime the media helps promote the program within the community.

The Crime Stoppers Association of Edmonton and Northern Alberta (CSAENA) was founded in March, 1983. CSAENA is a community, non-profit organization who relies on the financial support of the community to deliver its programs and services. The Association is governed by a volunteer board, administered by staff and service volunteers, and works in cooperation with the media, Edmonton Police Services and the RCMP.

The Board pays out awards to individuals who provide tips to the Crime Stoppers' tip lines. Since its inception, $1,189,739.00 (August 2005) in awards has been approved by the Board. Anonymity of the tipster is the foundation of the program. To ensure the anonymity of the tipster, the caller is given a code number. Once the "TIPS" information is evaluated, a police investigator is given the information to act upon. If the information is of value and results in an arrest, the details of the crime and arrest are brought to the Awards Committee of the Board for an award decision.

The tipster calls back on the TIPS line, identifies him or herself by the code number and is advised to pick up his or her award. All awards are dispensed by a civilian company and no attempt is made to identify the tipster.
