Welcome Alberta Crime Prevention Week is a time to promote community safety through crime prevention. All Albertans have a role to play in making Alberta a safe place to live, work and raise families.
History Crime prevention consists of proactive, non punitive measures which have the goal of addressing and/or removing factors which may lead to crime. Crime prevention may address the situation or physical environment, social and or economic factors and circumstances which may lead to criminality. Crime prevention week began in 1983 when the federal government promoted the first week of November as National Crime Prevention Week. In 1992, the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security began organizing the week with a provincial focus. At the request of the Alberta police services, the week was moved to the month of May in 1993 to coincide with National Police Week.
Crime Prevention Awards Ceremony An important aspect of Alberta Crime Prevention week is the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security Crime Prevention Awards Ceremony recognizing the outstanding contributions made by Albertans who use innovative crime prevention strategies to keep their communities safe. The 2009 Crime Prevention Awards ceremony will kick off Alberta’s 18th Annual Crime Prevention Week. The ceremony will be held on Friday May 8, 2009 in Edmonton. The 2009 Crime Prevention Awards Ceremony will be co-hosted by the Edmonton Police Service. To view award recipients and ceremonies from previous years please see www.crimeprevention.gov.ab.ca. To learn more about community approaches to crime prevention, please visit www.crimeprevention.gov.ab.ca or see the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association site at www.accpa.org; the official co-sponsor of the 18th Annual Alberta Crime Prevention Week.
Crime prevention and You! Thriving communities are composed of diverse people from all walks of life. When people know each other is it easier to identify and solve community challenges together. Crime prevention involves you getting proactively involved and working in partnership with your community to make your community safe. People who know and look out for each other makes a community stronger. Crime prevention is social cohesion at its best where communities problem solve together for solutions designed to benefit all community members. We encourage all First Nations in Alberta to join together to celebrate their achievements along side each other and encourage the involvement of youth and Elders. Crime prevention involves everyone.
