ALBERTA CRIME PREVENTION AWARDSThe Alberta government is seeking nominations for individuals or groups who help make communities safer by:
- demonstrating a commitment to addressing local crime issues;
- investing knowledge or resources;
- partnering with community members; or,
- achieving crime prevention outcomes through logical planning and implementation.
Categories include youth, individuals, organizations, community groups, media organizations, and police officers. Recipients of an Alberta Crime Prevention Award within the past two years are not eligible. Recipients will be selected by a committee of representatives from Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security, community crime prevention agencies, and Alberta police services. A ceremony to recognize the award recipients will be held on May 7 in Edmonton. The deadline for the 2010 crime prevention award nominations is February 19. CALGARY CPTED TRAINING
The Calgary Police Service would like to invite you to our annual Crime Prevention Through Environmental Training WEEK 1, APRIL 06-09, 2010 8:00 AM TO 4:00 PM DAILYORWEEK 2, APRIL 12-15, 2010 8:00 AM TO 4:00 PM DAILYNote: Please pick the week you prefer to attend. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) focuses on reducing criminal opportunities by modifying the physical environment. CPTED is used globally as a Best Practice to reduce crime, by police, planners, architects, designers, engineers, community and crime prevention associations, governments, businesses, home owners, builders, security, property managers, to name a few. The City of Calgary, Planning Department, liaises with the Calgary Police Service, Crime Prevention Unit and Community Liaison Police Officers to make every effort to use CPTED strategies in the city of Calgary to reduce crime and improve safety in our city. Students will expand their perception of the physical environment and its direct relationship to human behavior and crime. These courses will be held in Calgary at the Rosebud Room, McDougall Centre, Southern Alberta Office of the Premier, 455 – 6 Street SW, from 08:00 to 16:00 hours each day. Included in the cost of the course are refreshments and a course binder. Due to overwhelming demand, the Calgary Police Service will be hosting two separate level one courses (40 Hours) each. Please pick the week that fits your schedule and if you have a preference, reply as soon as possible, as the courses will fill quickly and we may not be able to accommodate your choice. We will not be offering a CPTED Level 2 Advanced training this year. Week 1, Tuesday, April 06th – Friday April 09th, 2010 and Level 1 Week 2, Monday, April 12th – Thursday April 15th, 2010, with John Periversoff, the Vice-President of Security Through Safe Design. Attached is a registration form outlining payment options, please return the completed form by February 15th, 2010. Please ensure you spell your name in exactly the same manner that would like it to appear on your Certificate. Calgary - The nomination process for the 2010 Calgary Police Commission Community Policing Awards is now open. These awards were successfully introduced at the 2008 Calgary Police Commission Community Dinner and are designed to give recognition to citizens for their contributions to community policing and to a safe city. Nomination forms are available on the Calgary Police Commission website and will be accepted until the close of business Monday, March 1, 2010. The Calgary Police Commission Community Policing awards are given to an individual and organized group or association or organization which has worked with the Calgary Police Service unselfishly and in the spirit of community policing to improve police policy and/or the ability of the Calgary Police Service to serve the community. Nominees are evaluated on:
- The time and/or effort required of the nominee to perform the work for which they are nominated.
- The gap filled by the work, or the gap that would be left by the absence of the work. and
- The value added to the Calgary Police Service, the Calgary Police Commission and/or the City of Calgary by their contribution
Commission Chair, Mike Shaikh, said, “This award program was created to acknowledge the countless efforts made by members of our community to assist our police service. It is an honour to recognize those groups and individuals who give of their time to improve community safety for us all.” As part of its oversight role to provide efficient and effective policing, the Calgary Police Commission wanted to recognize programs and people who contribute to community policing in Calgary. To nominate an individual or a group for a Community Policing Award, please complete the Nomination Form, found on our website at www.calgary.ca/policecommission, and submit the form to the Calgary Police Commission on or before the deadline. The Calgary Police Commission provides civilian oversight to the Calgary Police Service. Under the Police Act the Calgary Police Commission establishes policies to provide for efficient and effective policing; in consultation with the chief of police, allocates funds provided by City Council; and monitors the complaint process.
